Frequently asked questions
What is PDF/A?
PDF/A is an ISO-standardized version of PDF built for long-term archiving — it embeds all fonts, avoids external dependencies, and requires device-independent color, so the document looks the same decades from now regardless of software changes.
Which conformance level should I choose?
PDF/A-2b is the best default for most documents. Use PDF/A-1b if a system specifically requires the oldest, most conservative standard. Use PDF/A-3b if you need to embed the original source file (e.g. an invoice's XML) alongside the PDF.
Will my formatting change?
Visual layout is preserved. Some non-archival-safe features (certain transparency effects, non-embedded fonts, device-specific color) are automatically converted to their closest PDF/A-compliant equivalent.
